World’s First Full Face Transplant

31 year old Senor Oscar bravely appeared before cameras on Monday for the first time since his full face transplant.  The Spanish man accidentally shot himself in the face while on a hunting trip 5 years ago. Previous operations have involved only partial transplant; this is the first successful full face transplant in the world.  The surgery lasted 24 hours and required 30 different specialists to transplant the entire facial skin and muscles.

Now Oscar is finally able to talk, eat and breathe on his own after five years of being dependent. He will begin his physical therapy and is expected to regain 90 percent of his facial functions within the next 18 months.  Currently he is showing positive signs of progress, has regained the feeling in most of his face, and had to be shaved because of beard growth.

Oscar says he is eager to enjoy the “little things, like walking down the street without anyone looking at him, or sitting down for a meal with his family. Doing things that all of us do on a normal day.” Read more about this here
